TLP chief arrest: The countrywide predicament

Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) Punjab Police have detained Chief & Son of Moulana Khadim Hussain Rizvi, former Chief of TLP Moulana Saad Hussain Rizvi in Lahore on Monday. The TLP chief arrest has aroused country-wide protests.

A senior police official told Dawn News he was taken into custody on Monday as a “pre-emptive measure” ahead of TLP’s April 20 deadline. No first information report (FIR) against the TLP chief has been registered so far.

Supporters of TLP protested nationwide on the TLP chief arrest obstructing the traffic and troubling the public.

Violence erupted in major cities across Pakistan on Monday afternoon, killing at least two people and injuring several others, including police officers, following the arrest of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) president Allama Saad Hussain Rizvi, a day after he requested that the federal government expel the French ambassador over blasphemous caricatures.

The TLP was protesting blasphemous caricatures published in France and demanded that the French ambassador be deported and prohibited French products. On November 16, the government and the TLP reached an agreement to bring the matter before parliament for a three-month vote. As the deadline for implementing the agreement drew nearer, the government expressed its unwillingness to do so and requested more time.
